Draw Near – A Lenten Invitation to Lay Down Shame and Embrace Intimacy with God

In a few short weeks, we will begin our annual Lenten pilgrimage through the desert. All too often, though, we carry with us the heavy burden of shame, the feeling that we are not living up to our own expectations. Shame, however, does not come from God; He desires not our deeds, but our very hearts. This Lent, we invite you to lay down shame and embrace the freedom of intimacy with God.

During these forty sacred days, we will be guided by seven extraordinary saints, each of whom shines their own particular light on the path before us: St. Irmã Dulce Pontes in twentieth-century Brazil, Servant of God Catherine Doherty in twentieth-century Canada, Blessed Miguel Pro in twentieth-century Mexico, St. Teresa of Ávila in sixteenth-century Spain, Venerable Henriette DeLille in nineteenth-century New Orleans, Venerable Nguyễn Văn Thuận in twentieth-century Vietnam, and Blessed Stanley Rother in twentieth-century Guatemala.

As we reflect on these holy women and men, we will also remember our own call to holiness as we meditate on selections from Pope Francis’ powerful encyclical Gaudete et Exsultate (On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World).

We will follow the same format each week; there will be six days of reflections on the life and writings of the saints, a Scripture passage from the daily mass readings, and two meditative prayer suggestions to lead you deeper into contemplation. On Sundays, we will rest in Scripture and sacrament. Each Ash Wednesday God invites us back into His loving arms, calling to us, “Return to me with all your heart.” Come, let’s draw near.
